The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 72: Jude: The Challoner Revision

The shortest New Testament epistle burns with startling ferocity. Written by Jude, one of the Twelve, this brief letter wages war against false teachers who have infiltrated the early church, their corruption described in imagery borrowed from Jewish apocalyptic tradition: ungodly men who turn grace into licentiousness, who follow the way of Cain and the error of Balaam. What makes Jude remarkable is not its length but its tone: this is prophetic fury distilled into twenty-five verses, a tract for the times that refuses gentle language when souls are at stake. The letter urges believers to 'contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints,' to build themselves up in prayer while waiting for mercy. The Douay-Rheims version, first translated by English Catholic exiles in the late 16th century and revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in the mid-18th century, preserves an archaic dignity that modern translations often smooth away. This is scripture for readers who want their faith contested and defended, not comfortable. It speaks to anyone wrestling with how to hold firm in a world of easy compromises.
