The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 65: Hebrews: The Challoner Revision

The Epistle to the Hebrews stands as the most intellectually ambitious letter in the New Testament, a sophisticated theological treatise that argues, with devastating logic, for Christ's supremacy over the entire Levitical priesthood system. Written to Jewish Christians wavering in their faith amid persecution, the author constructs an elaborate comparison between the temporary sacrifices of the old covenant and the singular, eternal sacrifice of Christ as the great high priest. The famous eleventh chapter celebrates Abraham, Moses, and the prophets in a litany of faith that has shaped Christian devotion for two millennia, while the concluding warnings demand perseverance against the temptation to abandon the new covenant and return to the old. The Douay-Rheims translation, emerging from the English Catholic exile community in the sixteenth century and refined by Bishop Richard Challoner in the eighteenth, offers readers a particular linguistic beauty that has formed the spiritual imagination of generations of English-speaking Catholics.
