The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 60: 2 Thessalonians: The Challoner Revision

Second Thessalonians pulses with urgent pastoral concern. Written by Paul to a young Christian community facing persecution and confusion, this letter tackles two pressing anxieties: false teachers claiming Christ's return had already happened, and believers growing idle while waiting for the end. Paul's response weaves together reassurance and warning. He traces the arc of apocalyptic history, naming the "man of sin" who must be revealed before the Lord's day arrives. Yet the letter's heart beats louder in its practical counsel: stand firm, hold fast to tradition, work with your hands. Idleness, Paul insists, has no place in the Christian life. The Douay-Rheims translation, refined by Bishop Richard Challoner in the mid-eighteenth century, renders Paul's Latin into English that retains its gravitas and slightly archaic dignity. For readers drawn to early Christian theology, eschatological literature, or the texture of how Scripture shaped English itself, this letter offers both challenge and comfort. It reminds us that waiting has never meant neglecting the present.
