The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 59: 1 Thessalonians: The Challoner Revision

Written around 50 AD, this is among the earliest surviving Christian documents, a personal letter from the apostle Paul to a community facing persecution for their new faith. The tone is urgent and tender: Paul rejoices in the Thessalonian believers' steadfastness despite suffering, reminds them that Christ's return will vindicate those who endure, and urges them to live lives worthy of the gospel. What distinguishes this letter is its emotional directness. Paul defends his own conduct, expresses longing to visit them again, and offers practical wisdom about work, discipline, and mutual care. The famous passages on the 'rapture' appear here, but so do grounded instructions about ordinary Christian living. For readers unfamiliar with biblical literature, this brief letter offers an accessible entry point: one man's voice across two millennia, speaking directly to people who trusted that the end of all things was near.
