The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 55: Galatians: The Challoner Revision

Paul's letter to the Galatian churches burns with an intensity rare in ancient correspondence. Written around 50 AD, it arrives as a furious defense of a Gospel Paul believes is being actively corrupted in his absence - his converts in Anatolia are being persuaded that faith in Christ alone isn't sufficient; they must also follow Jewish law. The Apostle deploys his entire theological arsenal: Abraham's faith before circumcision, the slavery of the Law versus the freedom of the Spirit, the miracle of a faith that justifies without works. This is Paul at his most raw - not writing theology from calm contemplation, but fighting for the survival of what he preached. The Douay-Rheims translation, with its faithful adherence to the Latin Vulgate and Challoner's eighteenth-century refinement, gives Paul's urgency a particular gravitas. The language carries weight. The arguments cut. Whether you approach this as scripture or as literature, the letter remains a staggeringly bold defense of religious freedom and the radical claim that grace, not obligation, transforms human lives.
