The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 49: Luke: The Challoner Revision

Among the four gospels, Luke stands apart for its literary grace and its particular attention to the marginalized, the outcast, and the overlooked. Written by a physician who traveled with Paul, Luke crafts an orderly account filled with vivid parables, lyrical poetry, and some of the most moving narratives in scripture: the Annunciation, the journey to Bethlehem, the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the road to Emmaus. This Douay-Rheims Challoner revision preserves the dignified cadences that have sustained Catholic biblical reading for centuries, maintaining close fidelity to the Latin Vulgate while offering a translation that has shaped English religious language itself. The text carries the weight of four hundred years of devotional use, its phrases embedded in liturgy, hymnody, and the spiritual vocabulary of English-speaking Catholicism. Whether approached as sacred text, historical document, or literary masterpiece, Luke's gospel offers a portrait of Jesus whose compassion extends across all boundaries of status and circumstance.
