The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 45: 1 Machabees: The Challoner Revision

1 Maccabees is the definitive account of one of the most stirring revolts in ancient history: the Jewish uprising against the Seleucid Empire that gave birth to the Hanukkah story. When Antiochus IV Epiphanes outlaws Jewish worship, desecrates the Temple, and persecutes those who refuse to abandon their faith, an elderly priest named Mathathias takes a stand. Along with his five sons, including the legendary warrior Judah Maccabee, he sparks a guerrilla campaign that will reshape the political landscape of the ancient Near East. The narrative pulses with battlefield heroism, tactical brilliance, and unwavering conviction as the Maccabees transform from hunted rebels into the liberators of Judea. This Douay-Rheims edition, revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in the mid-18th century, preserves the dignified prose of the earliest English Catholic Bible translation. The book stands as both historical record and theological testimony, arguing that faithful resistance to tyranny is not merely justified but holy.
