The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 41: Sophonias: The Challoner Revision

The shortest book in the Bible contains some of its most devastating poetry. The Prophet Zephaniah, writing in the final decades of Judah's independence before the Babylonian conquest, delivers an uncompromising vision of the "day of the Lord" - a phrase he essentially coined. The text pulses with imagery of cosmic judgment: the earth laid waste, the proud brought low, the corrupt and cruel called to account. Yet embedded within this fierce prophecy is something unexpected - a promise that after the judgment comes restoration, that a remnant will be gathered and will rejoice. The Douay-Rheims translation, from the Latin Vulgate, preserves the cadences of an older English that gives the prophecies a particular gravitas. Whether read as ancient prophecy, literary masterpiece, or spiritual meditation on justice and mercy, this small book punches far above its weight.
