The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 31: Ezechiel: The Challoner Revision

Ezekiel is not a book you read passively. It is a descent into visions so strange and vivid they feel less like prophecy than fever dream: a sky throne wrapped in living wheels, creatures blazing with eyes, a valley of dry bones that crack and knit and rise. The prophet Ezekiel, a priest deported to Babylon with the first wave of exiles, receives his commission in these opening chapters through imagery that defies easy comprehension. He watches God's glory depart from Jerusalem, sees the city fall in vision while his wife dies quietly in the historical present, performs bizarre symbolic acts (lying on his side for 430 days, cooking food over dung) that make clear: this is not metaphor you can distance yourself from. The text moves through oracles of unrelenting judgment against Israel and the surrounding nations, then pivots with shocking grace toward restoration. A new temple, a river of life flowing from its threshold, a land reborn. The stakes are nothing less than whether a people who have lost everything can believe their God has not abandoned them.
