The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Book 09: 1 Kings: The Challoner Revision

The Douay-Rheims translation of 1 Kings presents one of the Bible's most gripping narratives: the birth of Israel's monarchy. It opens with Hannah's desperate prayer for a child, her vow to dedicate him to God, and the boy Samuel's miraculous conception. Young Samuel hears God's voice in the temple, a moment of profound calling that sets the entire trajectory of Israel's political and spiritual future. The text chronicles Samuel's reluctant anointing of Saul as Israel's first king, the king's tragic descent into disobedience, and God's rejection of Saul in favor of the young shepherd David. The Challoner revision (1749-1752) preserves the grave, deliberate prose of the 1609 original, with its Latinate rhythms and theological weight. This is where the Davidic dynasty begins, where the template for biblical kingship is forged in obedience and shattered by pride. For readers drawn to foundational texts, to the raw human drama of leadership and its costs, this is essential reading.
