The Beaver, Vol. 1, No. 04, January 1921

This is a primary source artifact from the early 20th century, a historical journal that captures the Hudson's Bay Company at a pivotal moment. The fur trade that had built an empire was entering its twilight years, but in January 1921, the machinery still churned. The issue opens with a vivid dispatch from London's fur auctions, where global buyers gathered to bid on pelts that had traveled thousands of miles from remote Canadian posts. We glimpse the friction and spectacle of commerce, the tension between traditional methods and modernizing markets. Beyond the auction houses, the journal ventures into Canada's North, into the lives of traders and inspectors who braved brutal geography to maintain the company's far-flung operations. Personal narratives from those connected to HBC posts provide intimate glimpses into a world that was already disappearing. This was Canada in transition: the old fur trade economy yielding to new industries, remote outposts still clinging to centuries-old rhythms while the twentieth century pressed in.
