The Battles in Flanders, from Ypres to Neuve Chapelle

This is wartime history written while the guns still thundered. Edmund Dane, a war correspondent who witnessed the conflict firsthand, provides an immediate account of the battles that defined the Western Front in 1914 and 1915, from the desperate first defense of Ypres through the grim advances toward Neuve Chapelle. This is not the distant analysis of later historians but the testimony of someone watching history unfold in real time, recording the strategic calculations of Joffre and French, the desperate stand of the British Expeditionary Force, and the terrible new reality of industrialized warfare fought in Flemish mud. Dane examines how two armies, locked in a grinding stalemate, hurled themselves against each other in battles that would claim hundreds of thousands of lives for mere miles of shattered territory. The account captures both the grand maneuvering of armies and the intimate human cost, the officers making impossible decisions, the troops holding lines that seemed impossible to hold. For readers interested in World War I from the perspective of those who lived through it, this book offers a valuable primary source written in blood.
