The Battle of Wavre and Grouchy's Retreat: A Study of an Obscure Part of the Waterloo Campaign

Ten miles from Waterloo, a different battle unfolded that might have changed everything. On June 18-19, 1818, French Marshal Grouchy pursued Prussian forces to Wavre, where his indecision and failure to understand the larger strategic picture cost Napoleon precious reinforcements that never arrived at the main battlefield. This 1905 study by William Hyde Kelly resurrects that critical, overlooked campaign from historical obscurity, examining the tactical maneuvers, the grinding retreat through Wavre's streets, and the fatal miscommunications that doomed the French emperor's final chance. Kelly argues with quiet conviction that a campaign full of mistakes teaches more than one without error. The result is not just military history but a meditation on how leadership fails, how opportunities vanish, and how one marshal's inability to read a shifting battlefield helped end an era.
