History - American, History - Warfare

The Battle of Gettysburg is not a historian's analysis but a soldier's heart laid bare. Colonel Franklin Aretas Haskell wrote this account as a letter to his brother in Wisconsin weeks after the fighting ended, and its power comes from that intimate origin: this is what one man saw, felt, and could not unsee. Serving as aide-de-camp to General John Gibbon, Haskell witnessed the three-day slaughter that claimed 50,000 casualties and turned the tide of the Civil War. His prose carries the weight of a man who watched his horse die beside him, who helped bury the dead, who stood on Cemetery Ridge as the rebel lines boiled toward Union positions like a fiery ocean. Yet Haskell does not merely catalog horror. His account breathes with the strange beauty of battle, the way men looked like giants in the mist, the terrible relief of knowing the big guns were your friends. He wrote of hope too, a vision of the Union reposing in securer peace and blooming in higher civilization. Forty-five years later that letter became a book. A year after Gettysburg, Haskell was killed at Cold Harbor, thirty-six years old. This is one of the war's finest eyewitness accounts: a voice from inside the storm, now silenced, preserved.
