The Baptist Magazine, Vol. 27, January, 1835

A window into 1835 Baptist England, when a community of faith wrestled with the moral earthquakes of their time. This volume opens with the stirring memoir of Mrs. Peggy Waugh, a woman whose quiet piety carried her through decades of personal trial and religious conviction. Her story stands as testament to the particular burdens faced by women of deep faith in an era when belief could cost everything. Beyond her narrative, the magazine plunges into the urgent debates of the day: American slavery, which split churches and consciences, and Sabbath legislation that divided parliament and pulpit alike. These pages capture Baptists not as historical artifacts but as living, arguing, doubting, and believing human beings. For readers interested in primary sources, religious history, or the texture of everyday 19th century life, this volume offers something rare: the actual voice of ordinary people grappling with questions that still haunt us.
