The Balkan Wars: 1912-1913

Jacob Gould Schurman witnessed the Balkan Wars firsthand as American Minister to Greece and Montenegro, and his 1914 account remains one of the most immediate historical records of these devastating conflicts. The book dissects the alliances and betrayals that drove two wars in as many years: the 1912 coalition of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro that shattered Ottoman control in Europe, followed by the 1913 intra-alliance war when Bulgaria turned on its former partners. Schurman meticulously maps the Great Power manipulations of Russia and Austria-Hungary, the explosive nationalism tearing the region apart, and the diplomatic failures that made WWI almost inevitable. His analysis remains vital because the borders drawn and grievances forged in 1913 still smolder. This is not distant academic history but a contemporary witness reckoning with a powder keg that had already exploded once before igniting the broader catastrophe of 1914.
