The Babes in the Wood: One of R. Caldecott's Picture Books
1595
In the black heart of English folklore, two innocent children are abandoned in a vast and indifferent woodland, left to perish by the very uncle who should have protected them. When their parents die, their inheritance falls to a greedy brother who hires ruffians to dispatch the children in the forest. But even the hardened men cannot go through with such evil, and they abandon the babes to the woods instead. Lost and alone, the children wander until cold and exhaustion claim them. Yet in this darkest of tales, a small robin descends and gently covers their bodies with leaves, a gesture of grace that has moved readers for over four centuries. This is the original dark fairy tale, unflinching in its portrayal of childhood vulnerability and the depths of adult betrayal. Caldecott's illustrations give the old ballad new life, rendered in his signature energetic style that captures both the terror and tenderness of the forest. The Babes in the Wood endures not despite its darkness, but because of it: it tells children the truth that the world can be cruel, while offering the smallest comfort in the form of a bird's simple kindness.
