The Aviator and the Weather Bureau

In 1915, the airplane was barely a decade old, and every flight was an act of defiance against the unknown. This book takes us inside the War Department aviation school in San Diego, where young men learned to conquer the sky under the watchful eye of meteorologist Ford A. Carpenter. Written with the urgency of someone who understood that weather could kill as surely as any enemy, Carpenter's account captures a pivotal moment when aviation was still more art than science, more faith than engineering. The book is a working meteorologist's field notes from the front lines of flight: detailed observations of how wind, pressure, and temperature determined who flew and who waited, first-hand narratives from pilots braving unpredictable currents, and the technical lessons learned from every successful ascent and terrifying stall. Carpenter shows us the Weather Bureau not as bureaucrats but as the essential partners who made heavier-than-air flight possible at all. This is where modern aviation was forged, in the tension between human ambition and atmospheric forces.
