The Authoritative Life of General William Booth, Founder of the Salvation Army

Railton knew Booth intimately, he married the founder's daughter and served as the Salvation Army's first Commissioner, so this biography carries the weight of firsthand testimony. The book traces Booth's journey from a hungry child in Victorian England to the leader of a revolutionary Christian movement that rewired how the world thought about poverty, redemption, and radical compassion. We see Booth as a young apprentice, his faith ignited by his mother's quiet devotion, then as a traveling preacher who discovered that the church had abandoned the very people who needed it most. The narrative builds toward the audacious founding of the Salvation Army, a paramilitary structure of salvation, with uniforms and ranks, designed to reach the unreachable. Railton doesn't sanitize. He shows Booth's stubbornness, his battles with church authorities, his refusal to accept that the poor were beyond saving. This is less a saint's legend than a portrait of conviction in action. For readers curious about where modern social justice and faith-based activism intersect, this book offers the origin story.
