The Attempted Assassination of Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt

The bullet struck him in the chest, lodged against his rib, and still Theodore Roosevelt walked to the podium. What followed became one of the most remarkable moments in American political history: a wounded presidential candidate, bleeding internally, refusing medical attention until he had delivered his speech to thousands of waiting supporters. "It would take more than one bullet to kill me," he told his aides. And then he spoke for nearly an hour. Oliver E. Remey, writing in the immediate aftermath of the 1912 Milwaukee shooting, reconstructs that October day with vivid detail and deep admiration. He traces the assassin John Schrank's path to the rally, the chaos in the crowd, and the extraordinary minutes when Roosevelt's survival hung in the balance. The book captures not just the dramatic events but the broader implications: an era when political violence was becoming distinctly American, when candidates campaigned without modern security, and when one man's refusal to be intimidated became a symbol of a nation's stubborn spirit. For readers fascinated by presidential history, the anatomy of political violence, or the strange grit of American character, this account preserves a moment when a bullet could not silence a candidate's voice.
