The Art of Fencing; Or, the Use of the Small Sword
1734
'The Art of Fencing; Or, the Use of the Small Sword' by maître d'armes Labat, first published in 1734, is a detailed instructional manual on fencing techniques, particularly focusing on the small sword. The text serves both experienced fencers and novices, emphasizing technique and strategy over brute strength. Andrew Mahon's translation highlights the importance of selecting the right sword and mastering guard positions and body movements for effective thrusts, making it a foundational work in the study of fencing.
