The Apostles

In the weeks after a Jewish preacher is crucified in Jerusalem, his followers face an impossible choice: scatter into obscurity or believe the impossible. Ernest Renan's 'The Apostles' depicts the birth of a movement that would reshape world history, tracing the transformation of a handful of frightened Galilean fishermen into missionaries who would carry their teacher's vision across the Roman Empire. With the psychological precision of a novelist and the rigor of a scholar, Renan reconstructs the fevered atmosphere of those first days: the empty tomb, the visions of angels, the resurrection faith that transformed grief into defiance. This is history written as drama, capturing the human stakes of faith being born in real time. Though Renan had abandoned the priesthood and doubted Christianity's supernatural claims, he approached its origins with profound empathy, rendering the Apostles as relatable figures whose doubt, love, and conviction still resonate. First published in 1866 as part of Renan's monumental 'History of the Origins of Christianity,' this volume remains a landmark of biblical criticism and a meditation on how movements begin.
