The Annals of Willenhall

This is local history at its most obsessive and affectionate. Written in 1908 when English antiquarians still believed the smallest parish had a story worth telling, Frederick William Hackwood traces Willenhall from its hazy Saxon origins through the Reformation, uncovering a town's worth of battles, bishops, and buried treasure along the way. The book opens with the town's name itself a mystery, exploring linguistic theories about what "Willenhall" might mean before moving through the Battle of Wednesfield and the influence of figures like Lady Wulfruna. Hackwood writes with the passionate certainty of a man who knows every stone in his hometown, mixing documented fact with the kind of regional pride that makes you forgive the occasional historical liberties. For modern readers, this is a time machine disguised as a municipal archive. Anyone curious about how ordinary English towns remember themselves will find here a model of that act of preservation and invention.
