The American Missionary — Volume 41, No. 8, August, 1887

This is a primary document from a pivotal moment in American history. August 1887: Reconstruction has been dead for a decade, Jim Crow is rising, and the American Missionary Association continues its quixotic, essential work. This issue of The American Missionary offers an intimate window into the struggle for Black education and civil rights in the post-Reconstruction South. The periodical documents the AMA's network of schools and universities serving African Americans, Native Americans, and immigrants, institutions literally building Black intellectual life from the ashes of slavery. We hear from teachers in the field, see the financial ledgers that kept these missions alive, and read personal testimonies of students and educators fighting for dignity in a hostile nation. The annual meeting announcements reveal the logistical and moral challenges of sustaining this work against mounting opposition. For historians and anyone interested in the long arc of civil rights, this periodical is invaluable. It captures a generation that refused to accept the reversal of Reconstruction, that built schools and colleges when the broader nation looked away. It is a record of hope maintained under extreme duress.
