The American Missionary — Volume 41, No. 6, June, 1887

This is history in its rawest form: the June 1887 issue of The American Missionary, a monthly dispatch from the front lines of late 19th-century American reform. Through editorials, field reports, and desperate financial appeals, we hear the voices of missionaries working among formerly enslaved communities, Native American reservations, and Chinese immigrants on the West Coast. The American Missionary Association was bleeding money, its schools and churches struggling against both systemic racism and their own insolvency. Yet the issue pulses with something harder to quantify: stubborn hope. Teachers write of students learning to read. Ministers describe congregations building churches with their own hands. Editors argue that true Christian charity means dismantling the very structures of discrimination that keep their flock in poverty. This is not a sanitized retrospective. It is a time capsule of American idealism wrestling with American reality, and the tensions it documents, from debates over segregated schools to the first stirrings of what would become the civil rights movement, still resonate. For anyone researching race, religion, or reform in the Gilded Age, these pages are indispensable.
