The American Missionary — Volume 41, No. 5, May, 1887

A window into a pivotal yet overlooked moment in American social history, this May 1887 issue of The American Missionary captures the American Missionary Association at a crossroads. The editorial urgency is palpable: funds are critically low, demand for schools and churches in the South overwhelms capacity, and the organization stretches itself thin across Black communities, Indian territories, and emerging Chinese mission fields. Yet amid the financial desperation, the personal testimonies sparkle with life. There is Aunt July, an elderly formerly enslaved woman, her gratitude for the care she receives radiating from the page. There are teachers in rundown schoolhouses, missionaries navigating the last days of Reconstruction's promise, and a quiet desperation to do more with less. This is not nostalgia or hagiography; the publication documents real tensions between evangelical ambition and racial uplift, between progress and the barriers white America kept erecting. For historians of American religion, education, and race, these yellowed pages offer something invaluable: the raw, unfiltered voice of an era wrestling with its conscience.
