The American Missionary — Volume 41, No. 12, December, 1887

A remarkable time capsule of post-Reconstruction America, this December 1887 issue of The American Missionary documents the 41st Annual Meeting of the American Missionary Association in Portland, Maine. The AMA was among the most progressive religious organizations of its era, operating dozens of schools for freedmen across the South and advocating fiercely for Native American and Chinese immigrant communities. The proceedings capture a moment when missionaries, educators, and reformers gathered to debate the pressing issues of their time: the convict lease system in Mississippi, funding for integrated schools, and the moral obligations of the church toward the nation's marginalized populations. The language reflects its era, but the underlying commitment to education and racial equity was genuine and consequential. For historians of American religion, Reconstruction, and the struggle for civil rights, these pages offer invaluable primary source material. This is not a narrative to be read for entertainment but a document to be studied, revealing the complicated, often contradictory efforts of those who believed Christianity demanded social action.
