The American Missionary — Volume 41, No. 1, January, 1887

A window into one of the most consequential chapters in American history, this January 1887 issue of The American Missionary documents the work of the American Missionary Association in the years following Reconstruction. Here, readers encounter urgent fundraising appeals, field reports from schools serving freedmen's children across the South, testimonies from teachers laboring in remote mission stations, and dispatches from work among Native American tribes. The tone is optimistic yet aware of formidable obstacles: the struggle to sustain educational opportunities for Black Americans amid rising Jim Crow laws, the challenge of establishing lasting institutions, and the tension between humanitarian purpose and the paternalistic assumptions of the era. This is not a narrative but a kaleidoscope of primary sources: statistics, letters, appeals, and updates that together compose an invaluable portrait of late 19th-century American reform movements. For historians, students of African American education, and anyone seeking to understand the complex roots of American social welfare efforts, this volume offers raw, unfiltered access to the ambitions and limitations of post-Civil War humanitarianism.
