The American Missionary — Volume 36, No. 9, September, 1882

A rare window into the fraught optimism of post-Reconstruction America, this September 1882 issue of The American Missionary captures a moment when the nation wrestled with the promises and failures of emancipation. The American Missionary Association, a coalition of abolitionists and reformists, used this periodical to rally support for its work among formerly enslaved people, Indigenous communities, and Chinese immigrants arriving on American shores. Inside, readers encounter financial reports revealing the desperate need for funds, field dispatches from under-resourced teachers laboring in segregated schools, and editorials grappling with the moral weight of a nation that had freed four million people yet denied them true citizenship. Personal testimonies from students and ministers attest to education as both liberation and resistance. The volume pulses with urgency: the Annual Meeting looms, constitutional amendments are proposed, and the question of whether the nation will honor its wartime promises hangs in the balance. For historians and anyone curious about the roots of American racial struggle, this is not just a document. It is an artifact of faith, frustration, and the relentless work of building schools where none existed.
