The American Missionary — Volume 36, No. 5, May, 1882

A rare window into Reconstruction-era America, this May 1882 issue of The American Missionary documents the ambitious, complicated work of the American Missionary Association among newly freed Black Americans, Native peoples, and Chinese immigrants. Through letters from missionaries in the field, readers encounter vivid firsthand accounts: teachers laboring against local hostility to establish schools, students hungry for literacy, and communities building churches under difficult circumstances. The editorial pages reveal an organization perpetually fundraising, perpetually pleading for resources to sustain its mission of ' uplift' through education and Christianity. Yet the publication also exposes the era's paternalistic assumptions about who needed saving and why. Reading these pages feels like holding a time capsule: the optimism coexists with the troubling racial hierarchies of the era, making this essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how Americans grappled with the aftermath of emancipation.
