The American Missionary — Volume 36, No. 4, April, 1882

In the spring of 1882, the American Missionary Association faced a $30,000 deficit and published this urgent appeal to readers across the nation. The April issue captures the Association's ambitious scope: establishing schools and churches across the South, documenting African American funeral customs, advocating for Indigenous communities, and supporting Chinese immigrants facing violent persecution. This periodical served as both a fundraising vehicle and a detailed record of Reconstruction-era social work, revealing the complex entanglement of religious philanthropy with the struggle for racial justice during a pivotal moment in American history. For historians and anyone researching post-Civil War America, this volume offers invaluable primary source material on education, missionary efforts, and the daily realities of communities navigating systemic oppression.
