The American Missionary — Volume 36, No. 12, December, 1882

A remarkable window into late 19th century America, this December 1882 issue of The American Missionary documents the ambitious educational and spiritual work of the American Missionary Association during Reconstruction's aftermath. Here, in its own voice, the AMA reports on its network of schools serving formerly enslaved people, Native American communities, and Chinese immigrants in the West. The annual meeting minutes reveal the organization behind institutions that would become historically significant: Fisk University, Howard University, and dozens of training schools across the South. These pages capture both the optimism and the desperate financial struggles of an era when the fight for Black education hung in the balance. Letters from missionaries in the field describe classroom victories and persistent obstacles. For historians and readers curious about the tangled, complicated origins of American educational access, this periodical offers authentic voices from a pivotal moment in the nation's long struggle toward equality.
