The American Missionary — Volume 36, No. 1, January, 1882

This January 1882 issue of The American Missionary offers an intimate window into one of the most ambitious reform movements in American history. The American Missionary Association, founded in 1846, operated hundreds of schools across the post-Reconstruction South and frontier, serving freedmen, Indigenous communities, and newly arrived Chinese and Japanese immigrants. The issue pulses with the energy of a new year: field reports from teachers in Tennessee and Dakota, appeals for funds to keep mission schools afloat, and testimonies from students whose lives have been transformed through education. Yet the publication also reveals the era's profound contradictions. The same pages that celebrate Black achievement and condemn racial prejudice also articulate a assimilationist worldview that viewed Indigenous and immigrant cultures as obstacles to be erased. For modern readers, the magazine functions as a time capsule and a provocation, asking us to reckon with the genuine compassion of 19th-century reformers alongside the colonial assumptions that shaped their 'uplift.'
