The American Missionary — Volume 33, No. 04, April 1879

This April 1879 issue of The American Missionary arrives at a pivotal moment in American history, just twelve years after the end of Reconstruction and amid ongoing debates about the nation's moral obligations to its formerly enslaved citizens. The periodical captures the American Missionary Association's ambitious efforts to build schools, churches, and communities across the South and among Native American populations in the West. Featured prominently is the Arthington Mission in Central Africa, reflecting the AMA's transnational vision of uplift and conversion. The pages overflow with letters from exhausted but determined missionaries describing crowded schoolrooms, hostile local governments, and students walking miles for the chance to learn to read. Here too are the complicated truths of the era: earnest idealism alongside paternalistic language, genuine compassion entangled with assumptions of cultural superiority. For historians of American education, Reconstruction, and religious organizations, this volume offers vivid, firsthand testimony of how Americans grappled with the promises and perils of radical social change.
