The American Missionary — Volume 32, No. 12, December, 1878

This is a portal into a pivotal and troubled moment in American history. The December 1878 issue of The American Missionary captures the American Missionary Association at the height of its Reconstruction-era work among formerly enslaved people, Native communities, and Chinese immigrants in the West. The newsletter documents the Association's ambitious agenda: establishing schools and churches across the South, tracking the slow and uneven progress of Black education, and wrestling with the complexities of converting and civilizing Indigenous peoples. Beyond the official reports and statistics lies a more human story: the hopes of newly freed people building their own institutions, the contradictions of white missionaries bearing both gospel and cultural supremacy, and the daily logistics of a sprawling interracial enterprise operating in a nation still reeling from civil war. For historians, genealogists, and anyone curious about the tangled origins of American social justice movements, this issue offers primary-source immersion in the idealism and limitations of post-Civil War reform.
