The American Missionary — Volume 32, No. 06, June, 1878

This June 1878 issue of The American Missionary offers an invaluable window into the American Missionary Association's ambitious project during Reconstruction. The periodical documents efforts to establish schools and churches among freedmen, Native Americans, and Chinese immigrants while tracking new missionary ventures in Africa. Readers encounter detailed reports on educational progress in Southern Black communities, debates over assimilation policies, and the complex racial theories underlying missionary work of the era. The publication captures both the earnest aspirations and troubling limitations of post-Civil War reform movements. As primary source material, it provides direct access to how educated Americans of the period understood race, religion, and national identity during one of the nation's most tumultuous transitions.
