The Allied Countries and the Jews

Written in the heat of World War I, this collection of addresses by Rabbi H.G. Enelow captures a pivotal moment in Jewish history when the fate of millions hung on the outcome of global conflict. Enelow, a prominent American rabbi, examines the ancient and evolving bonds between Jewish communities and the Allied nations France, England, Russia, and Italy, while also addressing the growing yearning for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. These are not dry historical analyses but passionate pleas for dignity, citizenship, and belonging delivered to audiences grappling with uncertainty about their futures. The book illuminates how Jewish communities contributed to Allied nations while facing persistent prejudice, and how the war's promise of democratic renewal stirred hope that civil rights might finally be realized. For readers interested in primary sources from the early 20th century, this work offers an intimate window into Jewish anxieties, aspirations, and resilience during one of history's most tumultuous periods.
