The Agony Column of the "Times" 1800-1870

The Agony Column was Victorian London's most tantalizing public secret. In an era when direct communication between unmarried men and women was often scandalous, desperate souls turned to the classified pages of The Times to find lost loves, arrange clandestine meetings, and plead for reconciliation with estranged family members. This volume collects the most poignant and revealing personal advertisements from 1800-1870, each one a tiny window into hearts broken and mended in silence. A mother searches for a son who vanished after a family quarrel. A jilted lover places a coded message hoping a former flame will recognize their private signal. Young women advertise themselves as potential wives while their families vet prospective husbands through carefully worded replies. The range is astonishing: matrimonial hopes, business disputes, pleas for forgiveness, and debts of gratitude or betrayal. For anyone fascinated by social history or the endless tactics of the lovelorn, these pages offer seventy years of Victorian England's most intimate confessions.
