The Aeroplane in War

In 1912, the airplane was barely a decade old and most military leaders still viewed it as a curious novelty. Then Harry Harper, a pioneering aviation journalist and pilot, wrote this electrifying account of what the skies would soon become: a new battlefield where empires would rise and fall. Harper witnessed firsthand the fragile, fragile machines that would soon drop the first bombs in anger, and he understood with startling clarity that the ancient art of war had fundamentally changed. This is not dry military history but a breathless dispatch from the edge of a revolution in warfare, written by someone who watched the Wright Brothers' fragile Flyer transform into an instrument of destruction. The reader encounters the daring early pilots, the skepticism of brass hats, and the terrible vision of war conducted three miles above the earth. For anyone who wants to understand how air power was born, and how quickly humanity learned to weaponize the heavens, Harper's account remains indispensable.
