The 3 Little Kittens

Three little kittens have lost their mittens, and they're terrified to tell their mother. What follows is one of the most beloved nursery rhymes in the English language: a cascading tale of mischief, fear, and ultimate reconciliation that has enchanted children for two centuries. Originally refined by American poet Eliza Lee Cabot Follen and absorbed into the Mother Goose collection, this is no ordinary moralizing fable. Instead, it offers pure metamorphic fantasy and wordplay, the kittens rewarded not with lectures but with pie. The rhyme dances off the tongue, its jaunty rhythm making it impossible to read without smiling. From the anxious confession to the joyful washing of mittens in dew, each verse builds toward a small triumph: the mother forgives, the kittens feast, and all is set to rights. This is the kind of story that becomes a lifelong comfort, the one children request again and again, the verses worn smooth from repetition. It endures not because it teaches a lesson but because it understands something deeper about childhood: that getting into trouble and being loved anyway is one of life's sweetest gifts.
