The 23rd (service) Battalion Royal Fusiliers (first Sportsman's): A Record of Its Services in the Great War, 1914-1919

The 23rd (Service) Battalion Royal Fusiliers was unlike any other unit in the Great War. Known as the First Sportsman's Battalion, it drew its ranks from athletics clubs, hunting grounds, and sporting establishments across Britain, men who had traded cricket bats and riding crops for Lee-Enfields. This is their chronicle, recorded in the years immediately following the armistice. Fred W. Ward, himself an officer in the battalion, chronicles not just the battles and campaigns but the remarkable spirit that bound these men together. From the chaotic early days of formation, when enthusiastic amateurs learned military discipline, through the horrors of the Somme and Passchendaele, to the eventual demobilization in 1919, Ward captures what it meant for a generation of sportsmen to wage war. The book preserves their voice, their pride, and their losses. Essential reading for anyone interested in WWI, British military history, or the remarkable bonds formed between men who faced the unimaginable together.
