The 125th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry: Attention Batallion!

In the summer of 1862, a group of Illinois farmers left their fields and families to become soldiers. This is their story, told by one of their own. Robert M. Rogers, a private in the 125th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, writes with the unmistakable authority of a man who lived it: the awkward first drills, the nights spent shivering in inadequate uniforms, the terrible boredom between battles, and the bonds forged in shared hardship that no one who wasn't there could ever truly understand. Rogers documents the regiment's formation in Anna, Illinois, their mustering into service, and the long months of preparation before the true trials began. His account captures something that pure military history cannot: the particular ache of leaving home, the black humor of inexperienced soldiers fumbling through drills, and the quiet courage of men who discovered what they were made of when the testing came. This is a window into the Civil War from below the officer's perspective, told with homespun honesty and the kind of specificity that only memory and firsthand experience can provide.
