that Old-Time Child, Roberta": Her Home-Life on the Farm

Set on a Kentucky farm in the years before the Civil War, this gentle portrait of childhood follows Roberta Marsden, a young girl whose boundless compassion has earned her the nickname 'Lil Missus' from the workers who tend the land. Through Roberta's eyes, we see a world of rolling fields and morning chores, of sick neighbors tended with medicine and care, of animals that need feeding and friends who need company. Yet beneath the idyllic surface lies a household marked by loss: her father absent, her mother withdrawn into quiet sadness. Little Roberta, with her instinctive kindness and simple faith in doing good, becomes a beacon of warmth for everyone around her. Written in 1895, this is not a tale of adventure or drama, but something rarer: a quiet celebration of how one small heart can make a hard world gentler. It captures the texture of pre-war Southern life with tenderness and offers modern readers a window into an era when children's duties were real, kindness was practical, and love was expressed through daily acts of care.
