Testament

Testament

Taras Shevchenko

This is not merely a poem. It is a covenant between a dying man and his people. Written in 1845 when Taras Shevchenko believed himself at death's door, 'Testament' distills an entire nation's yearning for freedom into forty-two lines of devastating clarity. Shevchenko refuses heaven itself until Ukraine breaks her chains. He asks to be buried not in sacred ground but in the open field, on the Ukrainian plains, so that his body might rise again when the people finally rise. It's a poem that argues with God, that bargains with eternity, that refuses to rest while a nation remains in captivity. For over 175 years, these words have been whispered at protests, carved on monuments, and carried in the pockets of soldiers going to war. This is the poem that made a nation.
