Biographies, History - American, History - Warfare

At twelve years old, with his widowed mother's consent, Augustus Meyers walked into a recruiting office on New York's Cedar Street and enlisted for five years. He was small for his age but passed the medical exam. Within months, the boy was on Governor's Island learning to play the fife among other music boys in the South Battery. What follows is a remarkable document: a soldier's-eye view of the American military machine from the inside, written half a century later by a man who began his career as a child. Meyers served through the frontier years and into the Civil War, and he recalls it all with disarming simplicity. He describes learning an instrument, sharing quarters with other young recruits, the tedium of garrison duty, and the sudden violence of field service. There is no embellishment here, no grand philosophy, only the honest observations of a man remembering what it felt like to be young and far from home in a world defined by strict discipline and rough companionship. This is military history from the bottom of the ranks, the texture of ordinary soldiering rather than the perspective of officers. It is a rare and valuable window into decades of American conflict, told by someone who was there before he was even a teenager.
