Ten Months in the Field with the Boers

This is a rare and intimate account from inside the Boer War, written by a French officer who left civilian life in Paris to fight alongside the Boers against the British Empire. The author served under General de Villebois-Mareuil, the French aristocrat who became a legendary figure in this forgotten conflict. The narrative follows the journey from departure through Marseille, across the sea to Natal, and into the dusty reality of campaign life in the Transvaal. What emerges is not simple propaganda but something more valuable: the perspective of an outsider who chose a side, witnessed the bonds of comradeship across national lines, and confronted the harsh truths of war while it was still being fought. The book captures the optimism of enlistment, the strange friendships formed between men from different worlds, and the growing awareness of what it means to fight in someone else's war. For readers interested in colonial history, military memoirs, or the human side of conflicts usually told from the winning side, this account offers an invaluable window into a pivotal moment in South African history.
