Tales of Ind, and Other Poems

This late 19th century collection opens with one of the most devastating narratives in Indian poetry: the story of Seeta and Rama, whose love is shattered by famine in the village of Krishnapore. Pillai traces Seeta's journey from the warmth of her father's schoolhouse to the bone-deep hardship of begging, and finally to a famine camp, where hunger and desperation test every bond she has. The precision of this suffering, rendered in lyrical verse, establishes the collection's unflinching emotional register. Love does not survive untouched. Neither does dignity. Neither does hope. Beyond this central tragedy, the collection draws from the deep well of Indian mythology and human experience, weaving together narratives of love, loss, and resilience. Pillai bridges Eastern poetic traditions with Western literary forms, creating something that feels both intimately familiar and strikingly new. These are poems that speak across centuries to anyone who has watched everything precious slip away, and looked anyway for what remains.
