Synopsis of Jewish History: From the Return of the Jews from the Babylonish Captivity, to the Days of Herod the Great

This mid-19th century work traces one of the most consequential periods in Jewish history: the four centuries following the return from Babylonian exile. Henry documents how a displaced people rebuilt their temple, their city, and their faith from ruins, tracing the leadership of figures like Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah who shepherded the restoration of worship and community. The narrative illuminates the emergence of the synagogue as a new form of religious gathering, the establishment of schools to preserve Torah learning, and the formation of the sects, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes, whose debates would shape Judaism for centuries. Written with Victorian-era clarity and purpose, this synopsis offers modern readers a window into the crucible where Second Temple Judaism evolved, setting the stage for the world into which both rabbinic tradition and early Christianity would be born. It remains valuable for anyone seeking to understand the historical foundations of religious traditions that still shape our world.
