Key Themes
- Power and Succession
- The play explores how power transfers in a feudal society, showing the violent struggle between legitimate inheritance and might-makes-right. Kolbein's illness creates a power vacuum that various factions attempt to fill through manipulation and force.
- Honor versus Pragmatism
- Characters constantly face choices between honorable conduct and practical survival. Brand's adherence to his sworn truce conflicts with political necessity, while others abandon honor for expedience.
- Christianity versus Paganism
- The conflict between the old Norse gods (represented by Jarngrim/Woden) and Christian values (represented by Bishop Botolf) reflects Iceland's religious transition. The sword of pagan violence clashes with the crozier of Christian authority.
