Suomen Kansan Vanhoja Runoja Ynnä Myös Nykyisempiä Lauluja 5

A collection of traditional Finnish poetry and contemporary songs compiled in the early 19th century. Topelius, a physician and knight, gathers the lyrical works that represent the rich folklore and cultural heritage of Finland, featuring themes ranging from nature and mythology to daily life and spiritual beliefs. The collection serves to preserve the oral traditions of Finnish-speaking communities at a time when modernization was starting to overshadow these age-old customs. The book is divided into two main sections: ancient runes and contemporary songs. The ancient runes include various poems that recount the adventures of mythological figures like Väinämöinen and themes related to nature and human experience, such as fishing, the origin of fire, and seasonal changes, showcasing the vibrant folklore of Finland. In the second section, Topelius presents newer songs that reflect the lives and values of ordinary people, demonstrating a transition from oral narrative forms to written expressions of cultural identity. Overall, this collection reflects the importance of preserving national heritage through literature and the arts, encapsulating the synthesis of ancient traditions with modern influences in Finnish culture.
